Development of robust indoor navigation by integrating GPS/GALILEO with complementary technologies
As part of the INDOOR project, positioning and navigation technologies for safety-sensitive BOS applications and economically important traffic logistics applications for the professional sector are to be further developed and brought to application maturity.
One of the new technological challenges for GPS/GALILEO reception systems is the ability to position and navigate inside buildings (INDOOR) or outside buildings, which behave similarly to indoors due to shadowing and reflections.
Since GPS and GALILEO are by nature outdoor systems, the requirement for indoor positioning with high availability and accuracy brings other necessary supplementary systems such as external sensors or geographical information systems into play in addition to GPS/GALILEO. The scope of INDOOR is therefore much broader than just GPS/GALILEO, even if GPS/GALILEO is an essential core component. The focus of the INDOOR funding project is therefore on linking GPS/GALILEO with other information sources to fulfill the application requirements in an economical way.
